Just In Time For Easter, 2009 Edition

Newsweek Magazine recently ran a feature story proclaiming America to be a “less-Christian nation” as evidenced by a shrinking percentage of Americans professing a Christian faith. This statement and others like it appear in a recent Newsweek article provocatively titled, “The End of Christian America.”

Newsweek staff writer, Jon Meacham, took the liberty to interpret that a 2009 American Religious Identification Survey showing that “the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation has nearly doubled since 1990, rising from 8 to 15 percent,” means that Christianity is on the decline in America. His conclusions are faulty and have been called by one writer, “like trying to suck blood from a rock.”

The fact is, Christianity is not in decline. How do we know? Because the official head of the Christian religion, the Lord Jesus Christ, promised to build His church and He will continue to do so until the day He returns for that church, His bride (Matthew 16:18).

But Newsweek articles and surveys and statistics aside, we would do well to remember that our faith does not rest upon the current occupant of the White House is a Christian. Our faith does not rest upon a majority of Americans professing allegiance to Christianity. Our faith rests upon three powerful words, “He is risen.”

After His crucifixion and burial, Christ rose bodily from the grave. First He was seen by a group of women; then the disciples. Ultimately, He was witnessed by over 500 people at one time (1 Corinthians 15:6). His resurrection from the dead is celebrated by one third (2.1 billion )of the world’s population every Easter; and as Christ continues to build His church, I have it on good authority He is not the least bit worried about His ranking in the latest Newsweek article.
