The earth is getting ready to cool off big time according to R. Timothy Patterson, professor and director of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre, Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University.
According to Dr. Patterson, “By 2020, the sun will be starting into its weakest Schwabe solar cycle of the past two centuries, likely leading to unusually cool conditions on Earth. Beginning to plan for adaptation to such a cool period, one which may continue well beyond one 11-year cycle, as did the Little Ice Age, should be a priority for governments. It is global cooling, not warming, that is the major climate threat to the world.”
Where did I put my winter coat?
But isn’t global warming is the buzz word of the day, with everyone from Al Gore to Hollywood celebrities preaching Global Warming Gospel? Now I’m not sure what to do. Should I plan a move to Antarctica, so I’ll be comfortable when things have warmed up, or should I move to Florida in anticipation of the big cool-down? It’s so hard to predict the weather.
Perhaps we should consider another possibility – that God has everything under control and this old world will last just as long as God intends it to. You see, according to the Bible, it’s not global warming or cooling that will bring about the demise of this big blue marble we call home.
Consider what God Himself says on the issue:
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:8-10, NASB)
If that’s not global warming, I don’t know what is! But I’m not sure that’s what Al Gore and Company have in mind when they discuss the issue! But let God be true and every man a liar! God’s final judgment on this world will involve its complete, instantaneous destruction and its subsequent replacement with the new heavens and earth (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1).
Let’s be good stewards. Let’s take good care of the earth God has given us. But let us not be deceived – this world will last until God is finished with it, and not one day longer or less.
