A Friend
As a child, I was blessed to grow up in church, and that is precisely where I met someone who would prove to be a significant part of my part to this very day and I am sure, for the rest of my life.

He is my best friend, Mike.

Which brings me to the story I want to share with you.

We met at church when we were no more than ten or eleven years old. That, incidentally, is the age my daughter is now -- and I often wonder if any of the friends she now has, at least one of whom she has known since they were newborns in the church nursery, will be as close as Mike and I are as adults.

Pastor Arrested In Illegal Snake Bust
The pastor of a Kentucky church that handles snakes in religious rites was among 10 people arrested by wildlife officers in a crackdown on the venomous snake trade.

More than 100 snakes, many of them deadly, were confiscated in the undercover sting after Thursday's arrests, said Col. Bob Milligan, director of law enforcement for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

Most were taken from the Middlesboro home of Gregory James Coots, including 42 copperheads, 11 timber rattlesnakes, three cottonmouth water moccasins, a western diamondback rattlesnake, two cobras and a puff adder.

Which brings up this ethical question...

Is it morally wrong to break the law to smuggle illegal snakes to use in your church service?

I mean, really… wouldn’t a regular old rattlesnake do? Do you really need a giant puff adder?

When The Bible Becomes Reviled
In Matthew 10:22, Jesus, while giving instructions to the twelve disciples who would lead the church following His ascension, said, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake ….”

Jesus knew that His followers would be routinely criticized for furthering the gospel and adhering to the tenets of God’s Word. His words are certainly relevant today, as Christians are increasingly disparaged and mocked for living faithfully according to the Bible.

This week, WorldNetDaily.com reported that a homosexual man has brought suit against two Christian publishers, Zondervan and Thomas Nelson, alleging that the Bibles they publish violate his constitutional rights and cause him emotional pain because they say homosexuality is a sin.

Let's Go See A Movie

That’s what I said to the other pastors one afternoon last week… “Let’s go see a movie.” And off we went to watch Ben Stein’s documentary film, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.

Ben Stein is an orthodox Jew and believes that theory of evolution is an inadequate explanation for the existence of life, not to mention the world and everything in it. So he sets out to demonstrate in the film that scientists and university professors are being systematically fired and blackballed for even daring to suggest that Intelligent Design (similar to biblical creationism but not exactly the same) be put on the table for discussion and debate.

The Church of Oprah Exposed

Maybe I just haven't been paying attention. Or, maybe it's the fact that I'm a man, and the audience for Oprah's television show is decidedly female. But for whatever reason, I had no idea what the Queen of Television Talk has been up to.

For example, I didn't realize she had disavowed her Baptist upbringing and repudiated the doctrine of salvation through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him alone. I didn't realize New Age gurus are among her most frequent television guests. And I sure didn't realize Oprah was teaching classes in spiritualism on her website.

But I realize it now!

Are The Photos Really The Issue?

I recently read a story about a Baptist Church in Texas that is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a good old fashioned church split.  Nothing unique about that.  But when you realize what the church is fighting about, you simply shake your head and wonder, "How far can a church drift from the safe moorings of Scripture and still call itself a church?"

The controversy surrounds Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX. For the church’s 125th birthday, they planned to distribute a new pictorial church directory. But, since three gay couples asked to have their pictures included, Broadway Baptist has been involved in an increasingly divisive struggle over whether allowing the portraits to appear would be an endorsement of homosexuality by the congregation.
